Emotions!

"Viswa Mohan"...means the beautiful thing in the whole world, or can also be interpreted as the one that makes the world around you beautiful...Indeed!!

Yesterday, as the last event inAvenues-07 we had a musical night function by Viswa Mohan Bhatt on his Mohan Veena along with his son Sali Bhatt...

It was a performance that touched the chords of so many countless emotions, there is not one that I can speak about in this blog.

Every chord plucked in the veena seems to have touched that part of the inner body which arises all these emotions...

More than plucking it was like a painting being drawn with the veena being the canvas and the paint brush the strings on the fret...There

The artists got so involved in the play as if they are lost in their own world of solace, even if there was no one around they would have been equally happy in their play.

It dropped in my mind, what would the veena be thinking when they are playing so vigorouly on it, would it be worried about all the things that the artists' fingers are doing on its chords, would be it be concerned if one of its strings maybreakdown, or would be it be happy and lost in its world, thinking that, the strings are there to be plucked at and what better place to die than in the hands of its own master.

During the Jugalbandi, when all the three players are shaking their heads in unison to the tunes, it felt as if

Though Viswa Mohan Bhatt looked like Vijay Mallya, there is so much difference in the way they get their happiness...One probably extracts from the material things and the happiness is limited to himself and the other's happiness looks eternal and he can also ensure that the people listening to his music get the same amount of happiness...

The sad thing about this blog is that I dont remember all the emotions and the thoughts that were passing through my mind during the performance...It is my inability to reproduce my thoughts which is preventing me from writing any further in this article...

I hope every one had an enriching experience from the play!!

Manipulation of rules

I guess this is why EULA and other forms play a very vital role evrywhere...

One can make a mockery of all the rules mentioned, unless explicitly mentioned...

The same was done by a team participating in one of the events and there is no way one can make them culprit as the rules donot explicitly mention anything about the violations...

I guess the way things run around is by ensuring that people stop miscreants from spoiling the zist of the game, thereby ensuring fairplay...

The team were supposed to get goods using a cash of 750, but instead they took goods worth 3000 on a credit thereby not spending the 750/- that they were supposed to spend, this ensured that they got the best of both worlds...There is a huge discussion happening around, about the way things are manipulated, but one cannot disqualify them by speaking anything about the rules, so I guess people are tryign to find out other violations so as to disqualify them...

I hope the team is disqualified on ethical and moral front, but,
I guess the best way to ensure that the team gets disqualified, is if any other team is able to make better profits!!

God let the best team get the prize.

Second day of the journey...

On wa warm and sunny day, under pleasant weather, things have entered the second and the most crucial day...
After all the rush around by the volunteers yesterday. which took its toll on them, they embraced themselves to meet the demand for the second day...
The crowd is just trickling in...and most of the crowd is gathered in Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's speech...

Hopefully there would be more colorful crowd dropping in;)

Logistics team and the hospitality team are the ones who are engaged full time and they are the ones facing the wrath of every one....

Event specific organizers are just ensuring that their events are running smoothly or the arrangements for their team are in full swing...

With some big events planned for the day, and more crowd expected today, we just hope and pray that things will complete without any glitches...

Destination is not important..the journey is...Sam petroda

Here is a man who has revolutionised the telecom sector in India...
Here is a man who has fought through the bureaucratic hurdles of India...
Here is a man who has mantained his compose through the worst circumstances in life...
Here is a man who interacts with the tpo notch corporates and is still as humble as one can be...

He is Sam Petroda...Original name being Satyan...

As a part of the Alankar series, we had a live video conference of Mr. Petroda...and what a speech was that...

All that he spoke about was the situations in his life...and no GYAN

Being a gandhian he has ensured that most of his life his guided by those principles, the best being "WALK THE TALK"...

As mentioned by him, his endeavors with life has been quite interesting and exciting.

Born for Gujarati parents in a small town in Orissa, he pursued his studies in India and then continued his masters and Phd in USA..

He continued to work until the age of 31 and then he decided to come back to India...In ihs first visit to India after so many years, when he tried to call back US, he had tough time...So, he took up this challenge of doing something for the telecom sector in India...

He has literally elevated India's telecom from a scratch to the behemoth it is now...He have had to face wrath from the opposition parties..
but he always believed in himself and ensured continued in his persistence to fight for the things he believed...

Being a member of the national advisory board, he is directing the knowledge committee of India thereby ensuring that the disparities among the society are removed...

He believes that India has three major challenges up its sleeve...a) Disparity removal among the society, b) Providing opportunities to everyone, c) Building all the resources lot faster...

As a message to the youth he said that the designation comes from within and that the destination is not important, but to enjoy the journey towards it which is vital

Mr, Petroda...ruly is a man with a vision and mission!!

Google analytics!

This is a wonderful concept that I wasn't aware of...If everyoen already knew about it, then I guess iam the only ignorant person around...

Just in case if there is anyone who isn't aware of this topic, listen to it in a novice's words...

The organizers will give a clue about some keywords that the participants have to search, They will also provide the graph from the Google analytics regarding the hit rate of the corresponding keywords through Google search engine...

All that the teams have to do is identify the keywords, and get a prize...

This is the first time that I observed this game, and I was quite impressed by the game, the concept and the organizers...

Kudos to the people involved!!

Bureaucracy!

The moderators can delete this article, if they find it to be damaging the image of the site...But being a blogger, I guess I have the freedom to say things the way I want it...

We speak so much about the bureaucracies in the government, that they dont seem to understand the needs of the common man, and that they do no encourage the ones which most of the people generally appreciate...

But, when the onus is on us to take the initiative and ensure smooth process, we indulge in similar behavior, In that case what right do we have to comment on the ill treatment that we receive from the government officials...

Iam writing this blog after witnessing an event...The event was going on smoothly, and the crowd was appreciating the way things are happening...and out of no where comes this guy and removes the plug for the projector...the justification is that the projector is needed for a different event after half an hour...It took 10 minutes for the team to re-arrange the projector and bring things to normalcy...

The way things are dealt with by the concerned person because he was incharge of the projector resembled me of the bureacucracy....

I certainly udnerstand the pressure that the organizers are going through, and Iam very very vey impressed by the event management so far....

This is just a small aberration from the way the event has been handled, but I couldn't stop myself from blogging about the rude behavior...

Apologies for any discomfort caused henceforth! I dont intend to have any prejudice agaisnt the concerned person, but at the same time couldn't stop myself from commenting about it... End of the day everything happens for good..ain't it?

Added by Satyakam:

The views expressed by Sriram here are a spectator's view of the incident. Actually there has been a bit of misinterpretation of the incident. And this has led to the viewers feel so. The concerned person who (is thought to) pulled the projector plug out, actually was trying to take away the extension cable. He did not know that the projector was connected to that particular extension cable. He disconnected the extension cable and as a result the projector went off. The crowd felt that it was a deliberate attempt to switch off the projector. But people, how come anyone do so in an ongoing event? When he realised that he had plucked the wrong cable out, he was apologetic. In the heat of the moment people must have felt it as a deliberate attempt, which it was obviously not. This is not a clarification to the story but an insider's attempt to clear the confusion. By now you must have realised who the insider is... :P :P

Navonmesh...Panel discussion

The panel discussion part of Navonmesh, is just completed...
It was worth all the efforts I guess...
The panelists were primarily entrepreneurs from different sectors who have made it very big...

The common theme and the most common aspect of all the entrepreneurs is PASSION...

The energy was oozing out from their personality, speech and in every movement of theirs...

One question posed from the audience was do we really need MBA ?Souunds a weird question being asked in a festival being organized by a B-school :)...

Nevertheless, the panelsists were diplomatic enough to anwer that though most of them are not MBAs as such, but have pursued courses related to finance and other activities involved in running a business...

One of the panelsists spoke about the "QUESTIONING AUTHORITY" and that it would pay rich dividends...People, I guess, were tempted to ask, what if the faculty does not appreciate lots of questioning and that it may lead lesser grades!

Overall, this being the first part of the event that I was involved in I surely but certainly enjoyed the experience and hopefully all the other events would be equally enlightening!!

The Journey begins...

Finally, the day has arrived...

Things have just started and SOMites are rushing here and there to manage any final hiccups. Student incharges are pushing the logistics to arrange the stuff for their events;it suddenly appears that there is competetion between the event managers to ensure that they get all the required stuff even at the cost of other events...It looks like a performance appraisal discussion, where every project manager pitches for the best hike to his team members within the specified budget.

Students have started pouring in, and everyone is eargerly waiting for the things to start off..

Iam sitting in the auditoritum and looking at the events going on. It looks like the talk time over mobiles has just reached its peak, because every one is more or less over the phone ensuring that the concerned peopel are not facing any inconveniences, especially the students from outside and in specific the international students..to be more specific, girls from the international colleges :)...

Finally I got one task to be accomplished, so iam leaving the article at this juncture, will keep updating the blog as and when I have some free time...

Placard!!

Just a thought that poured into me, right now...

I was just talking to my room mate, who is going to pick up a person from the airport early morning...and I offered to accompany him

The interesting part is, both of us would be holding the placard waiting for the person to arrive from the exit gates...

Suddenly, I recollected the days when I was exiting out the gate and there were people from the company waiting for me at the exit holding a placard bearing my name...

So earlier people were holding placard for me and after I opted to do my MBA I will be holding the placard...interesting!!

But, do I feel even a pinch depressed?? The answer is a honest NOOOOO.

Irony is, I would be more than happy holding the placard, because I would be inviting a person to attend the event AVENUES, which I've started to associate closely to myself...

It is the same with many people I guess, the ones who were in very eminent positions, now are working and doing things which otherwise would be considered blue collar!, but every one is so enthusiastic about doing those activities...

Probably this is what is Avenues all about.. "A"venue where people from different profiles working together to make the event a great success!!

May god help us sustain this energy and comradery forever!

The glass door.........

More activity on the other side of the glass door and some filtered voices can be heard. but they are so many that they don't make much sense (to me). I'm volunteering for the strategy team tonight. Much ready to be the guinea pig but they politely informed me that there's a criterion even to be experimented upon. That is a minimal level of IQ and reading skills. Not that you can jump to conclusions about my IQ & RC so quickly, it's just that I'm feeling a "little" disinclined towards proving my mettle. And i clear the ground for more enthusiastic mates who have also "already" read the long-ish case study and are all set to play roles of some XYZ company's ABC CEOs. In the middle of the night. (Now, this was reduntant! It has to be middle of the night because during the day, our teachers still love us and would not let our lecture learning hours suffer in the interest of our sleep.)

Where were we.... I mean me, oh at the other side of the same glass door. The case study has been discussed and torn apart clause by clause and line by line. During this dissection process, I remain seated comfortably unaware of the nitty gritties of the case, listening to GnR's "patience". What irony!! It's them who need it and it's i who is being preached. But I'm also doing what most experts do, Comment. Just sit at a distance, watch (observe) and talk, talk not to your friends but talk at large you see. So, I'm talking tonight, yet again.

I didn't realise when, the analysis of the case was done and it was silent again.... as the team members left one by one and my friend stayed behind for few more minutes working on his laptop, maybe (I can only postulate) consolidating/analyzing the results... maybe, just taking a few minutes break which are the luxury only few can afford in SOM tonight. He looks tired, I can tell and so are my other friends who are working in the lab right now on the almost final details of everything. But there's a strange excitement about them which keeps them up and about, which keeps them working and driving..... it's our fest, our school, our pool of thoughts and ideas. It's ours.

And I forgot to mention, during that long grill of case study analysis, i went to the third floor (lab) once to get rid of the stiffness in my legs n the chatter of too many facts I couldn't want to comprehend. I saw something I had only imagined sitting in my room, how would it be if both the batches of SOM were present at a task at the same time, working as a team...... it's this HUGE. They say we are less in nos. when compared to some other hallowed portals of learning. You should see their energy, enthusiasm and spirit. It's amazing. Come Avenues and you shall see, we more than make up in our quality for what we didn't even think as worth giving a thought (quantity).

There's something about this place, something about this whole "school of management", it makes you wanna do everything it takes to rock the world and leave our mark everywhere we decide to.
Hats off to the spirit of SOM!!!
Hats off to those who are SOM!!!

P.S. Posting the pictures that I clicked during this duration of two hours which I have covered in this post. In the order they happened.

Cheers to all the Volunteers!!

I am so used to making this announcement in class.." I need 10 ppl to do some work"...and here they come...arnd 10-15 ppl crowd on to me all ready to help without even a single question...then they march on to all the departments of IIT witht the intention of speaking to the students...

Some of the responses people got from students are:
"We know when Avenues is....just tell us where do we get the passses from?"

"It is great to have a B-School right here in IIT and we like the activity scene at SOM"

Being part of the PR team makes me feeel really proud of our efforts...damn we are doing a good job of it!!

Today happened the mock drills for the Systems and the Negotiation game where the inputs of the participants really helped the co-ordinators of the event...

The posters have just arrived an hour back and we have ppl all charged up and rearing to go...all ready to go put these posters across IIT and to make sure the first thing a person notices on the IIT bombay campus for the next three days is AVENUES .07

Many cheers to ppl who are always willing to vounteer...be it for any kind of work

Cheers,
Jatin

Mock Games-II

Hey where is the article on Mock Games-I, you may ask.

But, since details of one mock game are already presented and the one that I wanted to speak about is a different one, I jumped to TWO...

More over, Iam not sure if the moderators of this blog permit me to reveal the name of the game, and hence I thought MOCK GAME itself was a decent name to proceed further.

Today was probably the toughest mock game I ever played. To begin with, we had a tough time trying to figure out where to beging with and how to begin with!

Even before I speak about that game, I should really applaud the amount of effort that went in designing the game. If only it was an offical work in any company, the organizers of the game would have received a special award for designing this game.

The game had so many constraints to deal with and on top of that are the rules. The way the game was designed it would test every aspect of the managerial skills that companies demand.
Only one person could successfully complete the game.

A special mention has to be made about my performance in the Mock drill...I ignored couple of rules and hence came up with a solution which had tremendous profits..so I made myself the self proclaimed winner!

I was expected to give some suggestions for any improvements in the game, and guess what I suggested!! To highlight the rules in BOLD so that no one else can miss them :)

Isn't that a worthy suggestion!

David & Goliath

Sounds familiar!!

But the twist in the tale is that it is not about the quarrel between David and Goliath but rather the creation of Goliath by David.

A group of people, students from SOM, of the size of David are trying to create an event, Avenues-07 of the size of Goliath.

The creative team has designed the shape of the Goliath...SOMU-the lion, with a lappy in its lap...The thought is appreciated by none other than the David of India!!

Every other activity thereon is designed and implemented to ensure the sustainenace of the giant's iamge. Every event is of a magnitude as huge as Goliath and at the same time retain the simplicity, elegance and charm of David.

I will add few more articles in the due course showcasing the evolution of Goliath.

PS: This article should have been at the onset of the event, but somehow could not resist the temptation to showcase APJ along with SOMU at this juncture.

Dead with deadlines...

Invariably, when we are requested (read as ordered) to do something, a tag of deadline also comes along with it. Deadline, hmmm... a rather ominous word to say the least. Guess it means we are going to be dead if we don’t work enough. Now imagine you hafta meet a “dead”-line having no clue as to what it is that you are supposed to do. Sounds like a typical day at the office? Hell of a yeah!!

Now to add to the confusion, you are with a team which is as clueless as you are. So, the gist is, we have a deadline to be met for something and we don’t know what it is and a team thats not a team at all. This would be a challenge indeed, ladies and gentlemen! A test of grit and perseverance guys and a darn good one at that!

What we will try to simulate via this game is this real life scenario. A game where you try and do the impossible, try and aim for the sky in a dysfunctional team. And all that matters is how well you keep your cool and think clear.

Dudes and dudettes, we had a mock run of the game a coupla days back and trust me, the game rocks!!! As Bart Simpson would have put it, “Be there or be square”.

something for everyone.....

For people like me, who would follow anywhere the sound leads(read music) avenues was a little silent to start with. When the work began months back and conceptualisation and format were restricted to certain room nos. in H1,11,12&13. Meetings followed every other week I should say, (those "attending" the meetings would be more aware of the frequency & duration of those) and every time you bump into a SOMite while transiting through one of the four hostels and acad buildings.... you ask for the sake of courtesy,"where from?" and the answer is Avenues meeting!!! I heard that so many times that it feels almost the way to greet people in SoM!!!

So, we heard and saw it coming much before we saw ourselves getting into the schedule of a B-school. So, you can't even cope up with the classes and assignments and projects and deadlines.... what did you think! There are baaps of multi-tasking who would take up more each day along with the MBA grill. How do they manage!!! i wonder aloud almost each time i see them working on Avenues departments and agendas and publicity. And though i wish to contribute in my small ways to this HUGE event organised and managed by Huge no. of small entities like myself, I'm obstructed by an ultra efficient species.

The species that instead of sleeping through the classes "utilises" that time to draft mails and invitations and concepts for Avenues. The species runs around between classes to other departments to publicise the event and the same species which is also omnipresent by the mere nature of its virtues, also runs around in the city looking for, literally grabbing opportunities to make Avenues a success!! Now, they are an evolved species but then they are also ultra-smart and know exactly where to engage those, who wouldn't engage themselves so easily!! (read me)

SO, I have been called to the hub of all activity after dinner to learn about my responsibilities during the events allocated to my name. And i suddenly become a guinea pig for the "trial run" of their games for the event. Here I am caught in a frenzy of confusion while all the activity happens on the other side of the glass door, and i stand and await my turn, for the experiment to be run on me!! On top of that when you ask the coordinators of the game, "exactly what they are gonna do" they tell you that they are gonna "test" the parameters and feasibility and standards of the game for the judges for maximum perfection on the final day. not very encouraging eh??

But then starts the game which is not just interesting and challenging, it is also seemingly simple, like most things in life, which is made difficult only due to restrictions we put on ourselves and our thinking. It is indeed simple when we break it down to the basic steps but it is this breaking down which is "not" so simple..... Anyway, I had multiple learning from the game and my way back I felt tired and exhausted due to the pressure of restraints required for the game. Meanwhile, my friends kept busy in the lab, in the departments, in their rooms.... doing what they are best at... yes, multi-tasking (that's the buzz word) And I go back to sleep wondering whether I would wake up in time for my morning class, cos' my friend hates it when I don't!

C K Prahalad to visit SJMSOM

‘Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought’- it’s indeed a privilege of Shailesh J Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay to have one such thinker inaugurate its annual international B-school festival, AVENUES 2007 this Saturday, 27th of Oct.

Prof. C K Prahalad is the globally-renowned management guru whose words have the power so intense that it can cut through systems, strategies, operations and perception of the masses; words which splinter existing rationalities and pave the way for new ideas. Words which decorate the lexicon of management jargon in the form of terms such as ‘Core Competency’ and ‘Strategic Intent.’ The author of the best-seller, ‘Fortune at the bottom of the Pyramid’ Prof. Prahalad is a PhD from Harvard University. He has taught both in India and United States, eventually joining as the faculty at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan where he holds the Harvey C. Fruehauf Chair of Business Administration and a Lifetime Achievement Award. Prof. Prahalad is a researcher, speaker, author and prominent consultant.

An amazing strategist that he is, Prof Prahalad has consulted with the world's foremost companies such as AT&T, Cargill, Citicorp, Oracle, Philips, Revlon, and Unilever to name a few. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of NCR Corporation, Hindustan Unilever Limited and the World Resources Institute. He has also received honorary doctorates from the University of London in Economics, Stevens Institute of Technology and University of Abertay, Dundee.

Prof Prahalad has been amongst the top ten management thinkers in every major survey for over ten years now. Most recently Prof Prahalad earned the third spot on Suntop Media's 2005 ‘Thinkers 50’ list rubbing his shoulders against Harvard strategy specialist, Michael Porter, and Microsoft founder, Bill Gates. The inaugural address of this laureate is a much awaited event at SJMSOM, IIT Bombay by the students of management education in particular and media and others in general. It is in fact such interactions that make an MBA so global in its reach and holistic in its perspective.

We are inching forward~~!!

Billu* is on the run.. From DD's office to the PRO's, from the SoM foyer to the SAC, he has been running around places seeking grants, permissions, exemptions and clearances. Life has been miserable for him of late, but he is enjoying every moment of it. Billu had joined IIT a couple of months back and so did Ghissu*, Bondu*, Pindu* and Cheeku*. All have learned how things work inside an IIT so rapidly. All are part of the logistics team of Avenues.07 which has painted the whole campus, primarily the area near SoM, with various colours.

Yesterday night numerous posters and banners were pasted all around the IIT campus and today we found curious onlookers staring and reading them with wide open eyes. Names like Sri Sri Ravishankar, C K Prahalad, Sam Pitroda, Saurav Ganguly and J M lyngdoh have raised quite a number of eyebrows. SoM students visited various departments today to talk to the students there about Avenues.07 and people flocked in large numbers to listen to them. Machchhar* was quite vociferous in the mess when he explained the interests he generated among the girls about Avenues.07.

Most of the on-the-spot games are having their mocks now and I can listen to the hoots and cheers all around. Shakaal* and his team have been putting letters and posters inside envelopes for quite sometime now. It is going to be an event to cherish in all terms. Hope, it delivers much more than the level of interest it has generated inside and outside the IIT campus.

Countdown getting closer

The countdown to Avenues is approaching its climax with greater strides. The best part Avenues could give to us was the application of theoretical concepts of class in real time. In the morning class of DMM, we were thought about the optimization techniques and later at night logistics team finds itself in exact situation. Though we didn’t have any motivation to solve it using optimization tools, as formulating the problem itself will take ages for us, we jumped into the action real time with our gut feeling. The game organizers are busy doing the mock drills among us. The amount of adrenaline rush it gives in the mock games, I was wondering what will the experience to be in a live game. The minutes of itenary are being worked out for the speakers. Looking at itenary of one such speaker gave me the feeling of dramatics where every minute is stage managed. The PR team is working at its best to create the best visibility. Any weired idea anyone comes up with to increase the visibility is suitably rewarded. Along with the euphoria of the feast we at times are getting hijacked by the surprise quizzes and the nemesis of it in results. But whatever be the jitters, spirit is high and effort is all in to make it a great event.

Letz make it rocccccckinnnnng!!!!!!!
Pushan

The lab was never so abuzz with activity!!!

The computer lab, our very own lab which seems always devoid of human beings(only computers are seen here otherwise!!) is suddenly full of people....zealous people who have shunned their books and assignments for a while in the pursuit of one single goal - The success of our B-school Festival AVENUES '07...

Someone's busy compiling mailers and list on their lappies, others busy with conceptualizing their games and events....the design freaks are doing such a great job getting the fantastic posters ready in time....and u have people doing the mock drill of their games and seriosuly speaking....I quite love this scene out here....it is so gripping and contagious...makes me feel I should contirbute even more....

Needless to say ...there are a whole lot of people working outside on the logistics of the event and contributing in every possible way that they can....

Kudos to this spirit of SJMSOM...

Can you hear the knock on your doors??

The countdown has begun for AVENUES.07. With 6 days to go, things have started moving in the top gear. The support teams and core teams have started having their sleepless nights. Yesterday night, it was logistic team’s night out. They had planned out a big promotional campaign in the IIT Campus. The campus with 600 acres land needs a lot of effort to be painted red. They executed their job to perfection. In the morning on way to our classes, we all were greeted by the Avenues theme banners and posters. The PR team today has been exceptionally busy with dispatching the invitation letters to B-school fraternity. The various game organizing teams are brainstorming how to make their events better. In the department, on stretching one’s ear one can hear people discussing about the events, inviting judges, fine tuning the game concepts and how to give great experience to the participants. But not to forget all these things are being conceptualized in between busy schedule of classes, mid-terms and ever so omnipresent quizzes. The increasing number of bleary eyed students working 25 hours a day! Nothing seems to douse the enthusiasm and as the event days approach, the adrenaline rush is increasing by each passing day adding more fuel to the efforts of the SOM junta.
